Messages to Man
‘Messages to Man’ was written in South America in 1978.It was totally different from anything I’ve attempted before. Inmy previous works, philosophical and social conceptsplayed a secondary role to plot development. Of course, these concepts could be inferred from the behaviour of thecharacters, but this depended mostly on the readers degreeof perception, which in turn depended mostly on the readerswillingness to identify with the character involved. In writing ‘Messages to Man’, I had two major goals. Thefirst was to present my philosophical concepts ascompletely as possible within the covers of one book. Thesecond, was to present these concepts as clearly aspossible so they would be understood by a maximumnumber of readers with a minmum amount of work. To dothis, it was necessary to avoid the wordy obtusenesscommon to philosophical essays. Only poetry couldcombine the clarity and brevity that I desired. As to whether or not I acheived these goals, it will be up to the reader tojudge.Belim, BrazilJuly 1978
